Folk medicine tradition associated with dandelion

The use of dandelion has a long tradition in folk medicine both in Europe and among North American Indians. It was the Europeans who introduced dandelions in the United States, mainly to the Midwest, to feed bees. Native Americans quickly learned to use the plant, including for toothache, heartburn and as a sedative and tonic. An extract of the root was also used to promote the production of breast milk after birth.

We also know from Europe that dandelion had its place in folk medicine. Drinked as a tea, the herb could relieve gout pain and it also acted as a remedy for indigestion. Although in ancient times it was not known that dandelion is very rich in vitamins and minerals, they experienced that the herb had a strengthening effect.
