LAVENDER

£15.00

The name lavender comes from the Latin word “lavare”, which means “to wash”, and refers to the herb being used in ancient baths. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, lavender was sprinkled on the floors of private homes and in churches as a protection against the plague. Lavender was also a popular herb because it kept insects away, and the scent lasted a long time. In the Nordic countries, lavender is first mentioned in Danish herbal and medical books from the 16th and 17th centuries. The oldest information about folk medicine use in Norway we have from Nordfjord around 1800 where it is said that the flowers were placed on alcohol that was drunk against epilepsy and fainting. From Land it is reported that lavender has been used against jaundice and chickenpox. The plant was otherwise used a lot to spread odor in bathing water, scent bags and the like. Lavender oil, often called nail oil, was used to lubricate gout, swelling and aching wounds.
